Southend on Sea, often simply called Southend, is a popular seaside city on the Essex coast, approximately 40 miles east of central London.
Located along the Thames Estuary, Southend combines traditional British seaside charm with modern entertainment, restaurants, shopping and beautiful coastal scenery.
Whether you are planning a summer holiday, a family day out or a relaxing weekend by the sea, Southend offers plenty of opportunities to enjoy the English coastline.
Discover Southend Pier
One of Southend’s most famous landmarks is its historic pleasure pier, which stretches approximately 1.34 miles into the Thames Estuary.
It is the longest pleasure pier in the world and offers visitors beautiful views of the coastline.
You can walk along the pier or take the pier train, making it an enjoyable attraction for visitors of different ages.
At the end of the pier, take some time to enjoy the views across the water before returning to the seafront.
Enjoy the Beaches
Southend has several beaches stretching along its coastline.
Three Shells Beach is conveniently located near the pier and Adventure Island, making it particularly popular with families.
If you prefer a quieter atmosphere, explore the beaches towards Thorpe Bay or Shoeburyness.
The coastline is also ideal for walking, enjoying an ice cream or simply relaxing by the sea.
Explore the Seafront
Southend’s seafront is filled with traditional seaside attractions, restaurants, amusement arcades and entertainment.
Adventure Island is a popular amusement park offering rides and activities for children and adults.
You can also visit the nearby Sea Life Adventure aquarium or explore the shops and restaurants around the High Street.
When Should You Visit?
Summer is the most popular season for visiting Southend, with warmer weather and a lively seaside atmosphere.
Spring and early autumn can also be pleasant, particularly if you prefer exploring the coastline when it is less crowded.
My tip: Spend at least one full day in Southend. Walk along the pier, enjoy a traditional fish and chips lunch and finish your visit with a relaxing stroll along the seafront.
